Secular Evolution of Disks

چکیده

It is found that a previously thought-to-be well established result of density wave theory, that there is no interaction between a quasistationary spiral density wave and the basic state (i.e. the axisymmetric part) of the galactic disk, is in fact false. When solved as a nonlinear and globally self-consistent problem, the presence of non-axisymmetric patterns such as spirals or bars is shown to lead to significant interaction of the basic state and the density wave, with the net result being the simultaneous acquirement of a quasi-steady wave amplitude and the secular redistribution of disk matter. The secular operation of this dynamical mechanism leads to the evolution of the Hubble type of a galaxy from late to early.

A New Challenge: Bar Formation and Secular Evolution in Lenticular Galaxies

To further enhance our understanding on the formation and evolution of bars in lenticular (S0) galaxies, we are undertaking a detailed photometric and spectroscopic study on a sample of 22 objects. Here we report the results of a 2D structural analysis on two barred face–on S0’s, which indicate that presently these galaxies do not possess disks. We discuss two possibilities to explain these sur...

Ngc 4608 and Ngc 5701: Barred Galaxies without Disks?

We have performed for the first time in the literature a 2D structural analysis on the barred lenticular and face–on galaxies NGC 4608 and NGC 5701. The results indicate that these galaxies either have never had large disks or their disks were almost completely destroyed by their strong bars, due to secular evolution processes. We discuss these surprising conclusions checking for signs of secul...

A Look At Three Different Scenarios for Bulge Formation

In this paper, we present three qualitatively different scenarios for bulge formation: a secular evolution model in which bulges form after disks and undergo several central starbursts, a primordial collapse model in which bulges and disks form simultaneously, and an early bulge formation model in which bulges form prior to disks. We normalize our models to the local z = 0 observations of de Jo...

Star Formation Properties in Barred Galaxies(SFB). III. Statistical Study of Bar-driven Secular Evolution using a sample of nearby barred spirals

Stellar bars are important internal drivers of secular evolution in disk galaxies. Using a sample of nearby spiral galaxies with weak and strong bars, we explore the relationships between the star formation feature and stellar bars in galaxies. We find that galaxies with weak bars tend to be coincide with low concentrical star formation activity, while those with strong bars show a large scatte...

Bulges or Bars from Secular Evolution?

We use high resolution collisionless N -body simulations to study the secular evolution of disk galaxies and in particular the final properties of disks that suffer a bar and perhaps a bar-buckling instability. Although we find that bars are not destroyed by the buckling instability, when we decompose the radial density profiles of the secularly-evolved disks into inner Sérsic and outer exponen...

Secular Evolution in Disk Galaxies: the Growth of Pseudobulges and Problems for Cold Dark Matter Galaxy Formation

We review internal secular evolution in galaxy disks – the fundamental process by which isolated disks evolve. We concentrate on the buildup of dense central features that look like classical, merger-built bulges but that were made slowly out of disk gas. We call these pseudobulges. As an existence proof, we review how bars rearrange disk gas into outer rings, inner rings, and gas dumped into t...
